PLAYA BLANCA ADVENTURE RESORT, PUNTA PAJAROS, YUCATAN

OVERVIEw

Playa Blanca is the sister resort to Casa Blanca.  It is on the same private island of Isla Punta Pajaros roughly 130 miles south of Cancun in the lush Yucatan. Located about 9 miles “down island” from Casa Blanca, Playa Blanca is a little more laid back while maintaining all the spectacular service and hospitality of Casa Blanca.  Situated on the cusp of Espiritu Santo Bay, it is perfectly balanced for flats and lagoon fishing.  The area is arguably one of the most prolific permit destinations in the world.  The area has a myriad of flats, unique river systems that flow into the bay and a network of lagoons that would take a lifetime or more to explore.  Playa Blanca has become a favorite for salt water adventure seekers the world over.  This is one of the most truly remote destinations that you can find with all the conveniences you could possibly yearn for.

FISHING

This destination has it all.  One day you might be heading down to Sacraficios flat to start your skiff trip down into the bay, or, you might head up island a tad for a lagoon adventure in Santa Rosa.  Anyway you slice it, your opportunities will present themselves.  Espiritu Santo bay has giant schools of bonefish and permit.  As you work your way to the rivers, you will find snook and tarpon.  Barracuda are always present and looking for an easy meal.  The bay is totally secluded and you really get the feel of “being away from it all”.

It is rare to see another skiff while out fishing here.  The lagoon of Santa Rosa has wonderful bonefish flats and tarpon love to cruise in the mangroves throughout the system.  Sometimes it’s difficult to keep you eye on the fish with all the abundant wildlife around.

TARGET SPECIES

Permit, Tarpon, Snook, Bonefish, Jacks, Barracuda, Sharks, Snapper, on occasion Cobia

ACCOMmODATIONS

The grounds at Playa Blanca are the idyllic beach setting.  Blinding white sand, palm trees and unsurpassed turquoise water.  The guests relax in Cabanas that are tastefully decorated and simple in elegance.  All cabanas are single structures or as a duplex.  All of the cabanas have a wonderful view of the ocean or lush surroundings.  You can always hear the sea and smell the salt air.  A few of the cabanas have two queen size beds and all have private baths.  Most of the rooms have A/C, but it is really not needed with the tropical breezes off the gulf.  Playa Blanca feels like it’s own Mexican fishing village.  Privacy is not hard to come by here.

All of the cabanas are detached and free standing, giving guests options to get away from it all.  The main “restaurant” building is the social heartbeat of the resort.  Here guests gather to trade stories of the day, make new friends, enjoy libations and relax.  The cuisine here is the freshest seafood you have ever encountered.  All of the meals here are prepared “from scratch” and infused with the all the local flavors from the area.  Bon Apetite’.

SEASON

October through July

BOATS AND EQUIPMENT OFFERED

Boats used by the lodge are 16-foot Dolphin flats Super skiffs that accommodate two anglers and your guide. Each Dolphin has a forward casting deck, tandem passenger seats, rod racks, and a poling platform. Of course, they always have a cooler.  On occasion anglers may request a panga for blue water or reef fishing.  Playa Blanca has a limited amount of gear available for anglers, as with any destination, we recommend to bring your own gear.  Some flies are available at the lodge, but they go fast.

HOW TO GET THERE

One of the greatest advantages in coming to Playa Blanca is how quickly you can get there.  Once approaching the island you can actually see many of the flats you will be fishing.

All guests should book flights to Cancun, Mexico. Guests making their own flight reservations must plan to arrive in Cancun no later than 2:30 p.m. and schedule their return flight no earlier than 12 p.m. noon in order to make connections with the regional air charter. From Cancun, Casa Blanca will provide a private air charter which will fly you directly to the island. Each plane can accommodate 4 to 5 guests plus the pilot. The flight to and from Cancun to the island is approximately 120 miles or 50 minutes.  After reaching Casa Blanca, guests are transported down island via truck with safari seating.  Don’t forget to keep your camera handy.

NON-ANGLING ACTIVITIES

The real question here is “what don’t you want to do on your stay?”  There are numerous

options to choose from including, beach-combing, shelling, exploring the many Mayan ruins looking for lost treasure, kayaking the tranquil lagoons in search of salt water crocodiles, snorkeling the gin-clear reefs (Punta Estrella is really good), bird watching,

Eco-touring or just about anyones favorite “hammocking”.
