OVERVIEW
If float trips and throwing poppers all day, getting voracious takes and spectacular explosions is your idea of a great time, the upper Mississippi River is the answer. This is by far the best kept secret for “smallies” in the country. This region of the upper Mississippi is prolific with smallmouth that get so little pressure you could cast a wine cork with a hook in it and catch fish. The Mississippi in this region is not what you probably think it is. The “upper miss” is a very manageable flow, with clean, clear water. Mayflies, Caddis and Stoneflies are often hatching during the day. This is a fertile river. This is a perfect location for honing your skills on arguably one of the strongest freshwater fish around. The smallmouth here will “horseshoe” an 8 weight fly rod easily. If you enjoy watching strong fish cartwheel and tail-walk after being hooked, these fish won’t disappoint. It’s hard to believe all of this fun and excitement is only 45 minutes outside of Minneapolis. A rare gem of discovery.
